Transmission swap
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum & just got my first AWD Safari, so I'm doing lots of reading on this great forum. My Safari is totally stock. It probably needs a transmission. My question, would I best replace with one exactly like it came from the factory or is there another that would be better. I of course would like a low range which I've read about but my climbing in CO where we spend summers isn't like it was when I was four wheeling in the 60s. I plan to raise it some, not radical, but maybe 4". Is that radical? I probably have much to do on this Safari with 250000 miles on the odometer. Just got it yesterday. So.............mainly, if I have to buy a tranny, what should I buy & suggestions on where to buy it will be appreciated, & maybe someone on the forum has one to sell. Im retired so cost is a factor. I'll be looking at the ads on this site. Thanks & I sure appreciate having this site w/ so much valuable information.

Re: Transmission swap
If you can swing it, go with a heavy duty rebuild from http://www.monstertrans.com/ or http://shiftritetransmissions.com/. I have read good things about both. I know some friends that have gotten excellent(but expensive) rebuilt GM transmissions from http://www.transmissioncenter.net/. I am considering a 200R4 raptor from them for my Monty SS.
As far as the low range I heard it would be better to change out the TC, LiftedAWDAstro has a great mod on that:viewtopic.php?f=58&t=8913&p=87706&hilit ... low#p87706
