metal lines chaffed

Post by coolen »

what would be an easy fix for a chaffed power steering line? My bumper cover has chaffed a small hole in my power steering line where it comes down and loops along the front of my van. I know that buying new is usually the easiest thing to do, but I haven't priced it yet, gotta wait til' tomorrow. If that isn't an option, would a junk of rubber line work?

Thanks all!!

here's an old pic from when my oil cooler lines were leaking. where the metal lines start, they continue down to the right in the pic. they run from the driver's side over 2.5' or so towards the passenger side along the back of the bumper cover. so when you're looking at the pic, the 2 lines you're looking at, aren't 2 seperate lines, just one continuous line. it loops back into itself.

make sense?

Thanks.

ya might get away with splicing it with a barbed hose fitting and a peice of hose.

Yes you can use rubber tubing but be sure it's fuel line. ATF will bleed through heater hose. You can ask how I found that out another time.

To help keep the tubing from slipping off metal line, put a very slight flare on it. Be sure to file any sharp edges off flare to keep the edge from shaving off any rubber when sliding rubber line on metal which could go in system. After adding my cooler, I've been running rubber line for a couple of years with no problem.

I like trans cooler rubber hose. Its a bit more sturdy than plain fuel hose. But then again I have been known to possibly temporarily for 3 years use plain fuel hose to repair my fuel line. I did note the "Not for Fuel Injection" message on the hose. Held the 60+ PSI without leaking or blowing apart.

The lines that run under the front valance is the power steering cooler line. There is no significant pressure there so you can easily use rubber hose rated for oils.

Another option is to remove it altogether and put a small cooler up front and route the lines to that. Your power steering pump will thank you.
