Sounds of non-Silence (over alot of the utes heads)

Post by dunedog »

So maybe I was quick on the 4.3 dying at 136,000 :-k ......what's a torque converter sound like when it is broke?

This because ,I went out to move my '97 out of the swallowing mud and now it seems to not have reverse and the banging and clanging ,I had origionally thought was bad mains might be a tranny problem. #-o I never drove this van other than to park it for winter storage.

I can't answer your question directly, but I know that given your miles a tranny rebuild isn't out of the ordinary. That beats needing a new engine, but my bro's tranny rebuild (of course, happened while he was on vacation) cost almost $2000.

If your astro is dead, I might want your plow ;)

Flex-plates have a tendency to crack around the bolt holes where the plate bolts to the crank, creating a very metallic noise. Listen with a mechanics stethoscope fitted with a piece of fuel line with the motor running while on a hoist.

When we were removing the blown v6 from my 90, we were surprised to find that the half-cover on the business end of the starter had broken off and was banging around inside the inspection cover wreaking havoc with the flywheel and torque converter. Try removing the inspection cover and taking a peek.
