17"X7.5" OEM alloys from a Z71 package (will they fit)?

Post by jolly roger »

Hi all,
just wondering if the above listed wheel will fit my 2003 AWD Astro LS.
I've seen them on Chevy Tahoes w/ Z71 package. (17"X7.5"). OEM.
I'm gonna use a 235/60R-17 tire. (Stock ride height).
Will try to list a pic of wheel in question if I can.
Thanks.

Hello,

They are nice but I recommend staying with 16" wheel and more height in side walls which gives smoother ride and allows you to air down from 35 psi to 25 for rocks.

The 2003 Astro AWD had torsion bar front springs which is strong but not as compliant as coil springs.

Also, 2003 to 2005 Astro front brake calipers are larger than 1996 to 1999 front brakes.
Make sure any 6 lug 16 '' wheels have adequate inside diameter clearance for the larger front brakes. I wanted a second set of wheels for my BFG KO off road tires and
I tried to use 16" wheels from a 1996 Chevy Tahoe but they did not have adequate inside clearance for the larger brakes.

Summit racing had some steel wheels for $100 each. Also, Tire rack.

The OEM Astro wheels refurbished go for $185 each at www.allrims.com

I've paid as little as $25/each for the 5-spoke OEM 16x7 Aluminum wheels from Astros and Silverados. (Though typically closer to $100/each.) Pretty sure there are GMC center-caps that fit these too, for those with Safaris who care about matching emblems.

There's a set of 4 on Craigslist OC for $350 right now.

EDIT: I've also got a set of the "turbine" style 5-spokes that I'd let go cheap, to anyone in/around SoCal:

Thanks for your input guys.
Would still like to hear from someone that's running a OEM 17" wheel.
Thanks.

Hi Herbie,

I used to work in Ventura County. I should have checked down there for nice used OEM wheels in and around Burbank and Sun Valley town which has lots of auto re cycling etc.
That is where I got my Manik grille guard.
Now I am in Norcal, Bay area.

I will look at the used tire and wheel places and see if I can trade my OEM 1996 Tahoe 16" wheels for some of the OEM 2003 Astro Turbines.
I don't get down to San Diego much any more.
I suppose it is actually a good safety idea to buy new wheels or re conditioned wheels from a legit seller even if they cost more. Wheels are the live line of the vehicle.
the steel American Racing wheels could be the way to go for off road I suppose. Steel is some what malleable on impact where as aluminum cracks and pulverizes itself when it breaks.

just today i looked at my nice NV 233 two speed T case and control switch which is waiting for me in my garage.
wow, I need to install that or go get a NV 236. The low range is what i really want for steep hills up and down.

Merry Christmas.
