1991 gmc safari dies randomly due to stereo?

Post by Derek939 »

Ok so it has not happened to me yet but 2 of my friends have drove the van and said they came to a stop the radio cut out and made weird sounds then the check engine light came on and it died. But It fired right up and no issues after. The other instance my gf said she was on the freeway and the check engine light came on and started bogging so she turned the radio off and the issues went away. I have not experienced it yet and I drive the van a lot. Any ideas? It's only got a stereo from the 91 gmc safari tape deck that's the only upgrade I did so nothing fancy at all. Any help would be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

My first guess is something went wrong with your upgrade. Make sure you are tapping power from the Radio fuse or that your radio is connected directly to the battery with a fuse. Don't want to share power input with any modules or other systems.

Pull radio, look for loose wires.

If possible, observe your system voltage when the problem happens.

How old is the battery and have you put a multimeter on the battery while it off and while it is running to see what kind of charge your alternator is putting out?

my guess is maybe a failing alternator or battery. the factory radios from then are essentially plug and play.
