can I use a 305 balancer on a 350?

Post by markmitchinnh »

I have a brand new harmonic balancer that was bought for a 305 and I am building a 350 is it interchangeable?
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.
Bought on Monday the 16th of April 2012

When I worked at the Chevy engine plant we used to pound in dowel pin wt's in the H/B's to balance each engine during run tests.Measure the diameter and if the same it might interchange, but still needs to be balance to your engine. This is yrs ago,but I vaguely remember they are not the same.I looked at Jeg's for you and found a range of diameters. What is wrong with the 350 balancer you have with the 350??.Just curious.

If it was mine,I would stick with the 350 balancer that I knew was balanced for the 350.

Alittle paint on that baby and it would look like new in no time. You might want to add timing tape to it while you at it.

It will work as long as it's not a 400 balancer. A 4.3L balancer will work too. The other thing is that the Vortecs (96+) use a balancer that's a bit shorter because of the reluctor. That means you have to have a 96+ balancer for them.

More power, bigger balancer needed as harmonic vibe is worse. Use 350 balancer if rubber bond is sound.
