New LED Dash Lights

Post by Fede »

Hey guys i just installed some LED lights in my gauge cluster. I didn't like the look of the filament bulbs, they make the gauges look cheap. So i put in some bright white 5LED bulbs. and i like how they turned out.

What do you guys think??

Our vans have a strange illumination in the instrument cluster. Instead of separate bulbs and sockets, some "Einstein" decided to mate the bulb and socket into one unit. Of course, these are available only through the stealership. Well, I wrote to http://www.SuperBrightLEDs.com and got this response:
The 168 is a common miniature wedge style bulb. I recommend the WLED-xHP5 on this page:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html#wled360

You'll also need a twist lock socket for this bulb which can be found here:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/hobby.htm#socket
Prices:
PC168 Bulb & Socket combo: $9.88 EACH
WLED-xHP5: $5.95 (Comes in White, Green, Red, Amber) Life: 10000+ Hours
T10 Socket: $1.19

There are four for panel illumination, use any color.

Two green for turn signals
1 Blue for high beam indicator
3 Red, one for brakes, one for seat belt indicator, one for low battery
2 Yellow, one for SES, one for ABS

You don't want to go to an all digital dash unless you want a mountain of headaches.

The reasons I didn't post pictures are simple.

1. I translplanted a 93 cluster into my 92 because the 92 cluster had a faulty gauge, not faulty lamps.
2. All the bulbs in the new cluster work.
3. At the time of posting, I was unemployed and on extremely limited funds.
4. I was only posting the part numbers for general information. So why should I post pix of PART NUMBERS? I did, however, post links of said items.

Hey thanks guys!! Sorry i didn't take more pictures of the install to make it easier to understand. But there actually pretty easy to install. Basically all you need to do is remove the front bezel, which is only 7 screws. Apply the E-brake on and put it in the lowest gear so that you can move the trim out of the way. Next you have 4 7mm bolts holding the cluster in, aswell as the gear indicator clip on the column. Now the cluster is out, there is another 7 6mm bolts holding the front clear plastic cover, and 3 more in the back holding a blue metal cover on. Take these off and you'll have access to the 4 bulbs that light the entire cluster. Replace those bulbs with the LEDS http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-White-T10-194-1 ... 286.c0.m14 (Those are the 1s i used but you can find them cheaper on ebay)
The only thing i had to modify is the metal cover. I had to cut out holes where the bulbs go because they are taller than the filament bulbs. And basically that's it. Test to see that the bulbs are working and put everything back together!!
Really easy to do and it makes it look a lot better!!

I hope this helps, im not that good at explaining things. lol

I was gonna do that with mine to. Actually i did, but i didnt like the bulbs that i got they arent that bright: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWNX%3AIT

I like the color but they are too dim. The dome lights are the same bulbs and they look even dimmer.

Im gonna return those ones and get these: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-39mm-High-Power ... 286.c0.m14
These ones will be nice and bright.

If your ever looking to replace you stock bulbs with LEDs, get SMD LEDs. They look like little yellow circles. They are much brighter than other LEDs. And the more LEDs in1 bulb the better.
