Spare wheel hoist

Post by cf100mk5 »

2001 Safari....lowered the spare wheel and removed it from the hoist so I could paint it to prevent further rusting.Wound it up without the spare tire on the hoist so the wire wouldn't be dangling. Went to lower the hoist when the spare was ready to be reinstalled and the hoist wouldnt lower. Tried putting weight on it while lowering/jiggling the wire etc etc but to no avail.Removed hoist mechanism and drilled out rivets holding it together. The wire had gotten out of its track when i wound it back up because of slack due to the spare not being on it and had jammed the internal reel.Anyways I took pics in case anyone wonders what the innards of the hoist mechanism look like.

actually, any chance you have pics of how to actually get one off??

I was at the wrecker trying to get one and removed all the bolts i could see but it still wouldn't come off.

I am in dire need of a fix or replacement to get my spare out of the inside of the van and back under it since mine had a broken cable from day 1 that I'd bought the van

i think my friend may still have is parts van so I have access to get one this wknd

thanks

doh! that's the crank part...

my mistake. I'm speaking of the actual part with the wire that pulls the spare up to and holds it in place ](*,) right church, wrong pew 8-[

well yes, it looks so different taken apart. maybe that entire thing is what I need to get off. the cable broke on mine and I no longer have the wide metal piece that sits in the center hole off the spare rim to pull it up, and not really sure how much cable has been lost, or if it's just the end.

I figured trying to get the entire assembly off the donor was the way to go.

at one point I tried getting one and took all the bolts off that I could see, it became loose but still seemed like there was something holding it to the underside of the van somehow

For those of us who dont want to take one apart due to negligence, do you just grease the wire in order to lube the assembly?

Re: Spare wheel hoist

I am not sure if you could just replace the wire.Luckily I didn't have to do this but when I bought my van the spare was missing and the wire was frayed and broken.I was able to get a used replacement spare and hoist included in the purchase price of the van from the used car dealer. I guess it is very common for the wire to rust and break off.

As far as the internals of the hoist mechanism mine was chock full of grease.I would imagine that lowering and raising the spare keeps most of the wire lubricated except for the lower part that remains exposed. I was wondering if I should clean up the lower part of the wire and then paint it. 8-[
