Which Steering columns are Compatable?

Post by I-Drive »

What year van or truck steering column will match up to and fit in my 96 Safari van column?
I am trying to locate one but it seems impossible around here.Is there any other GMC column that will bolt straight in.I can switch the plastics.
Thanks.

Do a search on this link:

www.car-part.com

It is a site for junk yards.Because it only shows what columns are available it isn't a true cross match book, but given the listings of what they say fits and models, yrs,it does give you a sense of what works.
1979 Malibu drag race only car
1999 Sonoma 4.3 5 speed-Rufus
1989 Astro-Ole Yellar cancelled-still selling off parts
1985 Astro-shop van R.I.P. my friend
1994 Astro LT RWD W4.3 rod knock RIP

Thanks for the link.
I was hoping that the yukon or something else also had the same column.
I guess no such luck.It shows only 96 astro or safari vans in a search on that link.Is the 96 the only year column that will fit this van?

I would think 96 to 2005 would fit. The steering wheels are different starting in 96. Not sure if an older one would bolt up though.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

The earlier columns might involve differences between OBD I and II.Anything outside of Astro/Safari's I would think would be very doubt full. :-k

One more question.lol
I found a 2000 astro van.It has the 4.3 and almost everything identical to mine except it was a 4whl drive van and on the shifter it has a Tow-haul switch. Will that effect my OD when I plug it in?
My van does not have that option. My shifter has P,R,N,OD,D,2,1. This shifter has P,R,N,D,3,2,1.
It is the same number of shifts but the Tow Haul option worries me.
Do you think it will work?

Just don't connect the tow switch.

Sounds like D=3 and OD=4, but shifting is mechanical so just make sure the linkage moves the same distance.
