Rear brakes hanging up

Post by infinite.chris »

Searched on here a lil and I kind of found a few people with brake issues but nothing really like mine.

I recently (last month) had a shop go through and do lines (heh) all the way around, and then a different trusted mechanic did the fronts (loaded calipers and rotors)

I kind of trust the shop, and def trust my mech. What's going on is the rears will sometimes hang, but if I set the e-brake (I don usually set it) then release it, they seem to be okay.

I'm kind of suspicious that its the adjuster in the rear or a rusted ebrake cable.

Halp?

If all you had done on the rears is replace the lines, then I would say you need to open the drums and clean them out. You may need to replace the hardware and lube the backing plates and make sure everything is free to move. There is probably a ton of brake dust in there.

I meant to add that he did rotors, pads, and both rear drums, just wasn't quick enough on edit :)

I'm thinking he replaced & cleaned hw back there. How hard / expensive is e-brake cable to change?

Sure it could be a e-brake hanging up.But do follow Dean's advise on lubing the contact points on the backing plate.I had that happen on the 94 LT.

Definitely will do, Thanks Gary and Dean!!

I'm thinking if, once they're lubed up and back together, they're not grabbing enough to stop it when rotating the tires by hand, I may give it a week to see if they're still hanging on me. It doesn't happen every time when I go to take off from being parked, just when it's sat for a bit, and even then, only occasionally.

I seriously think she's just ticked because I haven't driven her as often as I usually do.

I don't know how expensive the cables are but definitely lube the contact points and then don't use the parking brake for a bit and see if they hang. Another possibility is the rubber line from the frame to the axle could be coming apart on the inside causing a blockage making the brakes hang and/or drag.

Hm. That could be likely the issue. Noticed there was a little patch on top of the rear diff. Not sure where its coming from. Need a slow day to get through everything in the rear, chase down these demons :/

Fixed! Turns out it was the drivers side ebrake cable that was hanging it up. Little zip zip withe the grinder and shes all good now.

Rebalanced my rear tires while I was at it. Can't believe how far off they were. And it was Sears that balanced & mounted them 0_o
