@#$/^&* GM Anti theft radios

Post by LAZ 1 »

Wellll ...
hottest weekend so far here on Fantasy Island and the electronic selector switch for the AC/ Heater in my 99 Safari went brain dead. The fan still blows BUT the air only comes out of the defroster vents. Fortunately I have another spare parts van with a good selector switch and a bad fan motor.

SO
in reading the Haynes shop manual they state that
step 1 of any dash / electrical work is to remove the negative battery
cable.
Then they post the warning that removing battery power will activate the radio anti theft device.
AND
they warn that removing the dash without disabling the power could cause the air bags to go off.

What a pain in the butt.
Having dealt with the code reset 1-800 number before I am getting very annoyed with GM. WHO WOULD WANT TO STEAL THESE CHEAPO RADIOS ANY HOW??

JUST A SCAM TO ALLOW THE DEALERS TO SQUEEZE ANITHER FEE.

Read your manual but there is a way to turn the anti theft off so you will not have a problem.

Also if the fan still blows cold but only out of the defrost you have a vacuum leak somewhere as all the vents are moved by vacuum. It is a common problem if you do a search you should find the common spots for failure.

Good luck

Thanks for the tip about the vacuum lines.

Will check this out BEFORE taking the dash apart.

Vacuum hose plastic tube was broken off right by the T fitting. Easy to reach, and there was only a short piece of the plastic left. The rest is all rubber hose.

I ordered a new GM part ... nice to have a spare when off the road in some hot place like the Baja.
