1987 Variable Speed Sensor on gauge cluster

Post by capulet_x »

I was hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I have a 1987 5-spd Astro van from which I would like to remove the gauges. Apparently because it is an earlier year the VSS is located inside of the speedometer rather than at the transmission. I was hoping that someone here might have empirical knowledge regarding options for relocating the VSS using some kind of adapter off of the existing mechanical speedo cable (I would like to retain my mechanical cable because I'm thinking of using a vintage gauge assembly that I simply like looking at more). At the moment I'm not concerned with calibration just retaining VSS functionality as it seems that the PCM may require it for the TBI despite the fact that I have a manual transmission and no cruise control.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
