Gear whine?

Post by Cobra »

I slapped in a new Zexel Torsen differential in my 98 I was under serious time restraints so i skipped the proper setup procedure (i know stupid eh?) anyways I now have a whining sound coming from the rear diff which I believe to be caused by the backlash being set wrong it. It starts anywhere between 20-30kmh, is generally a higher pitch while coasting and is dependent on wheel speed. During acceleration it is almost silent, during braking it is quieter then coasting but not by much.

TimelessB: heres the info that i can think of at the moment

Well first of all, I need to verify your compliance of Rule 6B. :poke:
Videos of real-life tests would be even better.

How much did it set you back?
Why did you choose Zexel? (Japanese right?)
What was involved in the installation?

Get it setup ASAP! If you keep running it, you can ruin the gears.

TimelessB: I think it's made and invented in the USA and i don't dare touch my camera with grease covered hands. It's available for $600 right now it's the carrier so if your putting new gears in (which i didn't) you have to do pinion depth and the whole nine yards or it will be noisy (which i can confirm.....)

Torsen is owned by Japanese JTEKT now who has operations all over the world, so it's hard to say where it comes from now. Do you know if you got the A, B or C version?

Greasy hands? Come on, can't you use a rag or something? Everyone else manages somehow.

Yep. A very versatile and elegant design based on a simple physics principle.

Hmm. What's the difference?

I wonder how the Torsen would perform on a ramp like this

that video says VW says the car will move if only one wheel has traction and from their test that is true if the car was on a level surface. I think only the last test with the subaru would apply to our vehicles since the others tested were primarily FWD and the Torsen would only be able to make it up that ramp if you applied the brakes. Testing has shown that Torsen's aren't good for rock crawling because cases where the wheel will be in the air appear regularly, the HMMWV uses Torsen's and to remedy the problem they installed a system that will aromatically apply the brake lightly on the wheel that has zero friction. Oh I almost forgot some subaru's do use the Torsen not sure it that was one of them or not

Yup, with one wheel in the air, applying the brake will send a portion of available torque to the wheel with traction depending on the bias ratio of that particular Torsen unit. With yours, up to 3:1. Is that enough to pull 3 ton van up a muddy or icy hill, pull a boat up a slick launch ramp etc.
