HELP Pinion Yolk seal

Post by RINNY »

Does any one know a number for the seal that goes in the pinion yolk on a 2004 G80 rear end?

You talking about #35?

GM 12471523

SKF 17407 & TIMKEN 710547 are crossover but double check to be sure.

No. That is the pinion seal. There is a seal that goes into the yolk that slides into that seal. The seal in the yolk has a wear sleeve in it that slides into the pinion seal. the number on it is 40006690.

You trying to fix a pinion leak? Looks like that pinion seal sleeve only comes with a new yoke from GM so good to know for future use.

Better photo installed on yoke.

I ordered the seal. I will let you know if it comes with the wear sleeve. It came out in one peice and it looks like the sleeve is in the seal in the pic. I pulled a g80 out of another parts vehicle with the same gear ratio as mine (what are the chances!!) for $175. It is on my bench and I am doing the seals before I install the rear. New backing plates and diff cover also. Much easier doing it in my garage on a bench.

Another question. There is a white like caulk substance on the inside of the yolk and on the shoulder of the pinion gear at the end of the teeth where it meets the threaded part of the pinion shaft. Is this so no fluid can come thru the splines of the yolk and pinion and no foreign substances can enter the same way? If so what is it exactly?

I checked GM ESI and it specs part number 12346004, which is just teflon pipe sealant. I tend to use Permatex High Performance thread sealant on fittings and things like that.
