NP 136 info needed...

Post by LiftedAWDAstro »

To all of you guys with the NP 136 transfer cases, that is anyone who has a 1999 - 2005 AWD. I need some info on how much play and noises you hear on the rear drive shaft slip yoke at the tail housing. Basically if I grab the yoke at the u-joint, I can push it up and down and get probably 1/8" - 3/16" movement and also hear some clunking inside. Just wondering if that is normal or if I maybe have a bearing going bad inside. If a few of you could check and post back, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

Anyone? Anyone? Hey is this thing on?

Anyone with a 1999+ AWD have 10 minutes to check this out for me? You don't even need to jack it up. Just chock the wheels and place the trans in neutral so there is no bind on the drive shafts.

Just checked mine as well, no play any direction. I did notice my now twice replaced front axle seals are leaking again if that makes you feel any better.

Think it might be just the bushing in the extension housing or bearing further up and have to split the cases?

I DO feel better! :D Of course I have a leaky front axle seal too. LOL

I ordered the bushing and seal for the slip yoke early this morning so I will install them once they get here. Hopefully once that is in there won't be a need to open split the case. The output shaft has 2 roller bearings on it so there shouldn't be much if any play in it. I didn't check for play with the rear drive shaft removed. I think I am just feeling play in the bushing. The van does have 141k so a worn bushing wouldn't surprise me.

Good, glad I could help. =D> :D

I remember reading on another forum of a similar problem with a rwd Astro, replaced the bushing in the extension housing and all was good.
