Transfer case in a 2WD?

Post by 97CargoCrawler »

Is it possible and would there be any advantages from it? Someday I will buy an AWD van but for now I want to pimp my 2WD to the max.

What bolts up to the 2WD 4l60E without having to mess with the shaft? I don't want to void the 3 year warranty on my trans.

Soon I will have 33" tires, 4.11 gears, posi and 11" brakes. I'm obviously never going for serious off road but I do want a very capable urban warfare rig that may occasionally find itself where it doesn't belong or pulling something it probably shouldn't.

For those who want to flame me for not just buying an AWD now, I already have the ultimate 4x4 FJ40 Land Cruiser so I really don't need one. I could drive that under water and then up the side of Mt. Fuji any day of the week.

I'm looking for an add-on if it exists. Another bolt on accessory.

Can't help on technical side except I'm sure there are times it would be nice for low range! Never know what you may need to move. The landcruiser, That's just a bucketlist dream of mine! =P~ I am curious, hope not out of line, why do you care what others think of your projects? You have tons of work and seemingly mad skills into these things and they are great, but I hope they are for you, not to prove something to others. At the end of the day, you should be the only one you see in a mirror. I mean no disrespect, just curious. Kelly

Sure it's possible, I've seen where it's been to other vehicles online. Without messing with the trans to have a proper output shaft makes it more difficult though. Going that way will most likely require a divorced transfer case, a custom rear drive shaft and a bit of fab work. Me, I'd grab a decent JY trans, cross member and rear drive shaft from an AWD van then mount the 2spd TC to it.

Off roading like we do, I can see where the 2spd would be nice to have even without front drive wheels. Controlled descents without riding the brakes are so nice.

Yeah, you need a divorced case to not touch your current trans. Problem is I'm not aware of any late-model t-cases that are divorced, and an early (70s) divorced case from a full-size pickup might be hard to source. Were the early 80s Toyota cases divorced? I believe the Samurai case was. A Toyota case is probably strong enough.... not sure a Suzuki case is, but they will take some abuse.

NP 205 comes to mind.

The next step after that might be a coil 4 link solid front axle, some day?
The fit real nice into a 2wd Stro frame.

Here you go!

Mount up whatever t-case you want to your 2WD transmission without touching the trans except for removing the tail housing. You'll have to extend the VSS wiring so it reaches the t-case.

Look through this thread on Pirate 4x4. He builds kits to mate 2WD transmissions to pretty much any t-case you want. You just need to find one with a 27 spline input like a NP231 or NP241 from 1/2 ton trucks. You'll have to verify the output spline count on your current 2WD tranny. It requires some fab work for the mount and welding together...perfect for the DIY crowd! :supz:

There is a 5 bolt GM adapter in there. Someone asked about doing one for a 4L80E to BW4472 AWD case.
