1997 Astro Transmission - 2wd vs AWD

Post by gcronk3 »

Is there a difference between the transmissions in a 1997 2wd van and an AWD van. My trans went and when I talk to local shops there seems to be a "Hmmm" moment when I tell them I have AWD.

Thanks for any help.

The difference is the output shaft and there is no tail housing on the awd version. Other than that they are basically the same internally.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck

So....if I have to find a transmission for this thing...can I just get any 4L60E transmission and make it fit or is there a specific model number I should look for?

Well, it will have to be a 4wd style transmission for sure.
And, what about wiring?

Will a half ton 4wd truck 4l60E have the same wiring and gearing as an astro trans?
I know that they will physically fit , but theres often more to it than that....

My 1995 AWD had a fun transmission...
2021 Yamaha Tenere 700 - Blue.
2016 Yamaha XSR900 - Silver.
1990 Astro - AWD - Brown.
1987 Astro - With 5 Speed & 4wd - Silver & Blue.

But I bet that the 97 is a lot more swappable than that SOB 1995 model year that is one of a kind.
as long as its a 4wd it could come from a truck or a blazer or escalade or bravado or whatever cant it?
