Trans flush this afternoon

Post by Captn. Crunch »

It's like she knows how much money I've got stashed! Every time I get a couple of bucks set aside for upgrades, something goes awry. Last week the trans started acting up. It's been COLD and the first symptom was a very firm downshift back to 1st coming to a stop. It would go away when warm. Now shifts are mushy and getting worse. New filter and total synthetic flush scheduled for this afternoon. Hope it fixes the issues because if it doesn't ill be buying and rebuilding a used 4l60E and I really don't want to!

I swear I have the same issue with all of my toys/vehicles, they know the exact moment I have some $ and quickly proceed to deplete it.

First off I gotta give some love to my younger brother who owns a sales and service garage. He makes things like this soooooo much more simple. Put the van up in the air and dropped the pan. New filter and gasket no problems. Hooked up his Snap on trans flush machine entered how much fluid and hit start. Watched thu the little site glasses as red went in and mud came out. Buttoned everything back up wheels on the ground fingers X'd... No such luck. Slight improvement but symptoms remain. Found low mile (92k) 4l60e out of a 4.3 zr2 for $400. Trans swap is in my near future

Slight change of plans. Ordered some servo's and solenoids. Gonna bolt on $30 worth of parts to see if I have fluid leaking by causing lazy shifts before I change out the whole trans. Fingers still X'd

Still haven't installed the corvette servo due to the weather. It's snowing again WTF! Trans is actually acting better. New fluid continues to flush out debris and condition seals? Still planning on servo and solenoid swap soon as the SNOW GOES AWAY

Installed corvette servo last night. Very easy to do. Two 10mm bolts to remove heat shield. Twenty minute job once I got the servo cover to move. Probably first time since it was assembled in 99. Applying pressure with a large pry bar and tapping with a hammer was all it took. It didn't really fix much in the way of issues I'm experiencing but I really like how quick and firm the shifts are. This mod will be transferred to any trans I run in my van from now on!
Next I will be dropping the pan and installing pinless 1-2 and 3-4 solenoids.

Well nothing ventured-nothing gained "they" say. Did the pin less servo swap Saturday and ordered a used transmission today. Also ordered a torsion bar removal tool because I've only got this one face and its already FUBARed. Will put the servo's into the replacement unit. I love the smell of tranny fluid In the morning... NOT!

What to do...What to do. I've got a used transmission on its way. Pulled out of a 99 astro awd. My dilemma is whether or not to swap transfer cases at the same time. I learned long ago to limit the number of parts you swap out so if something is wrong you know right where to look. I have an untested two speed case ready to go in the van but its a bit of a Frankenstein with the guts from an NP236 stuffed into a 136 case. It makes sense to do the swap while I'm doing the tranny but my gut is leaning away from the double transplant. Smart or gutless? :yikes:

Have you had a transmission flush done to the car in the past? I'd like to know more about the service as I'm wary of getting my van flushed. Found this article on the net, but I'm still not too sure.

If your trans has never been serviced get it flushed. If your trans fails shortly after the flush, it was being held together by sludge and wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway. If you service the trans regularly I commend you and suggest keeping up with regular partial changes during filter change
