what is this part called that's leaking coolant?

Post by crash » Sat May 17, 2008 2:22 pm

normally, I'd post a pic and circle the problem LOL .. I'm at work and don't have my camera. there is an inline kind of vacuum looking thing on the heater hoses of the 93 van. under it, connected to it there is a metal rod that seems to have something to do with accuating .. I'm guessing something to do with the heater control. welll.. It's leaking coolant...

anyone know what the name of it is ?

AND... all that being said.. could this effect the van to be running hotter than normal? I was just about to change the t-stat and I saw where this thing was leaking....

thanks
Rob
ps. sorry for no visual 8-[

Is it just a few inches from the heater blower motor? If it is, it sure sounds like the heater shut-off valve. There should also be a vacuum line attached to it. The little seal that seals the actuator rod ain't doing it's job anymore, and you have to replace the assy as it's a non-serviceable POS.

When you select the temp high, or low by the dash control, this valve actuates open/closed to allow coolant to flow thru the heater core. Any leak that allows a pressure loss in the system will cause a slight increase in temp in the cooling system. Since ya gotta dump some coolant out to change the heater shutoff valve, I'd do the thermostat and flush the system too.....

Hope this helps.

Hey Jim.. is this for front and rear heat or rear only? I can only find one listed for rear bypass in my lookup at work.... not cheap either. looks like a trip to the wrecker is in order on tuesday

On my 91, the valve up by the blower motor is for the front heat only. My rear heat is controlled by a separate valve down on the right frame rail, almost a straight shot from the center spark plug on the right bank....

For that cheap price buy a new one, these plastic parts and the o-rings inside always go bad.

thanks guys... even though there wasn't one in my lookup by application... that link that jim posted helped a great deal. i was able to cross the number to a cooling depot # which my warehouse had one in stock. so I scooped it... my cost was less that $25.... as mentioned... for that price better to go new after going through all that coolant and effort to pull the old one.
