Mine has been making noise for years. I cheeked every thing changed filters and fuel pressure has been fine. Some days it is worse then others. A good replacement pump will fix the noise but for me it is not worth for me to pull the tank to change the pump. I just keep an eye on fuel pressure and turn the radio up.

Well... finally had a chance to change the fuel pump.
I think it was the problem... the van started fine, and
kept running idle for almost an hour, no noise from the new pump
and it didn't die...
Still have to take it for a test run, maybe this weekend...
Thanks to all for your help...

Change the fuel filter first! If it's clogged the pump is struggling to push fuel through it, and bangs away. That's all mine needed.
