Kickstarter Issue

Post by ikaleguy »

Hello ,

I am having issues with my Astro Van 2001 model.

The van is having starting issues. My Mechanic told me its the kick starter. After replacing the kick starter, same issue. The Mechanic removed the new kick. On inspection, the internal gears were shattered. We put in another kick that was perfectly OK,same thing happened, gears inside the kick shattered.

So am wondering what is wrong? Mechanic says probably electrical issue. Please help!!

let me give a background to what really happened. The Astro Van V6 engine was replaced with another v6 vortec engine.

The kickstarter that came with the replacement engine worked just once. The new engine is Ok and worked fine for some hours. When the mechanic tried starting the engine again , we started having the kick issue. So am thinking something is wrong somewhere that is damaging the kick after replacing the kick twice.

Could it be the replacement engine is not compatible with the original wiring of the ignition system?

Am based in Africa. The Van was shipped from the US.

I'm assuming kick is a slang term we are not familiar with in north America. Lol.

I had a similar prob with a jeep once.
The starter's gear would not line up correctly to the flywheel ring gear and the teeth would strip and break on the starter.
How is your ring gear surviving ?

yes Kick-starter is the slang we call it here.

The gear that engages the flywheel is always OK. Where the prob is the internal gears you see if the "Kick starter" is disassembled.

The internal gears are always shattered. This is the 3rd time its happening within 1 week. hence, my conclusion that something is causing it

lol, OK, that explains it.
While I have never had need of them I have heard of shims used in the starter. I don't think it is a wiring issue unless for some reason the starter would not disengage. You should be able to test a new starter on the bench before install.

It's been a LONG time since I played with a GM starter, but doesn't (didn't) GM use shims to adjust the starter's position? If this is the case, I'd guess it isn't shimmed properly.
