Stuck odometer.

Post by Triple »

The mechanical odometer and trip meter on my 95 AWD Safari stopped working a few days after I bought it. It jumped from about 103K miles to all zeros and stopped. Speedometer continues to function normally.

The previous owner claims the transmission was replaced just before I bought the van. He could not provide the receipt, but I can tell by how sparkly clean it is that it hasn't been in there long. I'm wondering if something was damaged or not correctly re-connected when the new transmission was installed. I've read that these vans, even the older ones, use some kind of electronic sending unit to power the odometer instead of a mechanical cable.

Where is it and what does it look like?

I've also read that gears within the odometer itself are prone to breaking, but I can't find any fixes. Has anyone experienced this, and if so, how did you address it?
