Is there a way to tell if it's full synthetic in there now?

Post by SkipMorgart »

I might be buying a safari (from a dealer) that has 120,000 miles on it. Is there some way to tell if the oil in the engine is already full synthetic? When I change the oil, I don't want to go full synthetic if it's dino in there now.

Thanks in advance.

No way to tell unless you send a sample for analysis. Just use dino oil and change it every 3000 miles. Sometimes you can find synthetic on sale cheaper than dino so I have used that.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

I used to work fir Valvoline and you can switch between synthetic and non-synthetic oil as much as you want. It will not harm the engine at all. It's just a myth that if you go synthetic that you can't go back.
01 Safari Cargo, 4.3 Vortec V6, 4l60e tranny, van is stock for now, will be using it for my mobile detail biz but still want to make it my own.
