High Pressure-Where is oil pressure sensor and relief valve?

Post by x92560 » Wed Sep 27, 2017 6:33 pm

I have a 1992 AWD Astro that is having high oil pressure readings on the dash. It runs 60-80PSI right now when driving. Idle pressure shows 40-60PSI. Its been building pressure the last 15,000-20,000 miles. I have already tried several different brands and viscosities of oil as well as several different oil filters. The oil pressure just keeps building. I am suspecting that the oil pressure sending unit is faulty or that the oil relief valve has gone bad. Hopefully the issue is one of those two otherwise the situation may be grim.

Can someone tell me where the oil pressure sensor is on the block?

Also looking for confirmation on the location of the oil relief valve. I have heard the oil relief valve is part of the oil pump and the pump must be changed if the relief valve is bad. From what I have read changing the oil pump requires dropping the front axle to get the oil pan off to gain access to the oil pump. Is this the correct location for the oil relief valve and the procedure to change the oil pump for my van?

Thanks for any info.

Test it with a pressure gauge, the dash gauges are not that reliable.

That is why I am asking where the oil pressure sensor is. I have a gauge already. I need to know where the senor is to install the gauge. Do you know where the sensor is on the block?

you can install a gauge near the distributor.

there is a 3/8 npt fitting in the block with little stem sticking up, and a sensor plugged in right there.
Install a 'Tee' and hook up the pickup for a gauge.
Its straight out of the center of the back edge of the block, right by the distributor.
pull the dog house.. right there front and center.

ALSO, there is a second sensor because there is a gauge plus an ECU. #2 is not as accessible as the 1st option though.
The second sensor hangs out of the block at the aft end of the drivers side cylinder head. Has a tin heat shield around it.
It is sort of a bell shaped thing kinda, with one wire clipped to the bottom.

I did finally get around to testing the oil pressure. I luckily found everything was fine. The gauge is just off by 20lbs too much. I also didn't realize that the oil pressure spec was as high as its. Still gonna need to drop the pan one of these days. Its got a tiny dent/nick from brushing a rock on a 4x4 trail. :) Glad I don't have to mess with it yet though.
