Skiing Mt. Baker

Post by MountainManJoe »

This isn't really van related (although my odometer did reach a quarter-million kms on the trip home), but I thought I'd share my weekend trip to the US, since most of you are yanks and quite a few from WA.

Mount Baker, also known as Koma Kulshan by indigenous people, is the northernmost of the Cascade volcanoes. It is active, and you can smell the sulfurous gasses coming from Sherman Crater at the top.
Elevation: 3,287 m (10,786 ft)
Prominence: 2,686 m (8,812 ft)

Most people do this route over two days. We opted for the single day push and lighter pack. I left my home in Coquitlam at 03:30. We hiked up the approach trail, skinned up the glacier on touring skiis, and switched to crampons for the final section up the headwall. Skiied from summit to base of glacier!

Here's a few excerpts:

Trip times:
House to House: 21:30 hrs
Car to car: 15:30 hrs
Ascent: Car to summit: 12 hrs
Descent: Summit to car: 3 hrs

No offense to anyone here, but I hate crossing the border. I am a trusted (Nexus) traveller, but the experience always leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The guards are very condescending.
