Quite often when your camping etc you need to know how to tie a couple of knots,here's a link to a great site that clearly illustrates how to tie those knots...

did anyone look at the sheep shank knot they say should never be used because it fails under loads with modern rope

That's when you should tie a Portugese (sp?) Sheep Shank. You probably won't find that one in your knot tieing book. I learned it from a guy who ran the launch service (small outrigger)from the tanker I worked on to the docks in Bahrain.
