I think my Fan Clutch is going bad.

Post by doyoulikeithere »

When I step on it, I can hear the fan just a whirring and making big wind as the engine speeds up.
I guess the clutch is supposed to stop that.
I could hear it making some ugly noises for the past few days, but tonight, the fan just keeps on running even on the higway.
Good thing gas is so cheep these days.
Probly have to just drive it a couple more days then put on one of the others I have layin around....
This patricular van has an appetite for them it seems.
This is the second time.

My experience with fan clutches is they create a vibration as they go bad. And they act up when its cold . Living where you live.... its always cold? On my old full size chevy vans, I always put cardboard in front on the radiator thru most of the winter. I wonder if covering with cardboard would get you more life out of the clutch.

Where I live is actually very mild.
It has been cold (for here) lately, and occasionally, I even had to scrape a tiny bit of frost off my windshield.
Super Cold in my town would be max -5 C lol... Any colder wold be just really uncommon and short lived.
Mostly it hovers around +3C or warmer. (11C in the sun last week) We even got an inch of snow last month, but it only lasted about 2 days.
I spend a lot of days in January at the beach enjoying the warm sun, or sometimes boating, or... Wish I had insurance on my KLR !!

I have a big electric fan & 180 degree switch laying around,
I also have at least 3 more stock astro fans layin round here.
Probly just go with the OEM for now...

Happy Winter Everybody. Spring is just around the corner now...

celsius .... down here they started teaching us metric and then didn't bother cause the US never changed over to it. I'll have to google conversions to follow how cold it is there.
Also, at least in NY state, bike insurance is for the whole year so warm winter days we can ride as long as the bike isn't torn down for annual maintenance.
