Here's the site - http://northwestoverland.com/

Camping, classes, fire, with like minded folks

Is anyone going? I think we're going to go and see what it's all about.

Meeting with like minded people is always nice. A three thousand mile drive to meet with like minded people is not going to happen. I envy you and your wide open spaces. Go- have fun-take lots of pictures and tell us all about it when you get the chance looks like a great time

Would be fun, but have several other adventures planned for this year already.

It would be interesting to see some of the vehicles and products, and I'm a member of Expedition Portal and enjoy a lot of builds/discussions, but honestly, I see evidence of too many in the 'Overland' community as being a bit pretentious and preachy. Where I come from and in my youth, we called it 'four wheeling' and 'camping'. :muhaha:

I am thinking of going ...
BUT ...
I could cross the water separating beautiful FANTASY ISLAND from reality [ aka THE MAINLAND ], drive to Arizona in my almost-completed new to me Micro Mini Motorhome AWD Safari build, and listen to a bunch of people talk about "overlanding",
and probably be exposed to some great new ideas and see some awesome builds that could give me ideas and inspirations for my current or next build,

OR,
I could stay here on Vancouver Island,
and spend my time actually DOING IT!!!

I have been here on the rock for over 30 years, bounced around some of the back roads, explored a few of the smaller Gulf islands, and believe me, I could spend the rest of my life "overlanding" around Fantasy Island without getting bored.

A tough call ...
but unless I sell a few of my other toys to fund the trip,
probably will stay here on the Rock.

this is what they call the "Island Mentality".

Hey Man, Surprised I've never seen your van round here before, neighbor.
This is an island paradise in the pacific. All's you need now is a KLR ;)

I rode a few KLRS in my time. ( five in total ). Went to the Baja on a KLR that I spent about $2000 extra on prepping. Rode around down there for a month. My riding buddy broke his leg that trip and I had to ride his BMW 650 DAKAR back for him, then fly down and ride up again on my KLR. When I got back from to Fantasy Island I sold the all tricked out KLR and bought a used low miles Dakar ... for about what I had in the tricked out KLR. The DAKAR is a much better bike and absolutely no upgrades required.

Rode the Dakar until I traded up to a BMW GS, because my new wife ( power back warming unit) loved to ride with me ... until she got her own bike.

Finally admitted my mortality and gave up adventure riding on 2 wheels. I sold my last bike, a fully tricked out VStrom 1000, and spent the money on a motorhome. Growing old gracefully now is the plan, and anywhere I can't get to in my AWD SAFARI, I CAN get to on my very nice folding MONTAGUE / RANGER mountain bike ... which rides around inside a storage compartment in my Safari big box .
