Gas Hand dance?

Post by G-O-W-N »

I just bought a 99 safari and the gas hand seems to be vibrating, it gives out an accurate reading i assume because i had half tank when i bought the van and ran it down to a little over empty but the gas hand just wont be still. Anyone else have this happen or heard of it?

My old 98 Astro did this but it was always accurate. Never messed with it.

A lot of them bounce around a bit, but are near actual fuel level. My mind doesn't recall anyone actually taking the time to find a remedy.

my 98 does it sometimes and is accurate my 97 is clearly affected by my turn signals..... but still accurate. Every time my turn signals come on the needle will drop then come back up when it goes back off the terminal on the battery looks like hell though cleaning the grounds i'm sure will fix my problem

Mine does, too, but it turns out that is a small problem that can be ignored.

This happens because the dampening fluid in the gauge dries out over time. The PCM drives it with a PWM signal, and the fluid was to hold it still. I fixed my gauge by injecting some 50,000 wt silicone fluid. You have to take it all apart to do it though.
