Dummy, you left the key in the ignition!

Post by CaptSquid »

No, I didn't. But when I remove the key and open the door, the chime goes off and doesn't shut up. This is most exasperating, as it can run the battery down. I've sprayed the ignition lock cylinder with WD-40 in an effort to achieve silence, but that doesn't seem to be working.

HELP!

I couldn't resist. O:)
Mine does the same if I don't turn it back far enough. In fact it will turn back to start and run if the ignition is turned.

You need to start chasing circuits to at least determine which circuit.
First thought that comes to mind would be pull half the fuses. If that keeps the battery overnight, on the second night replace half of fuses the second night and so on until you get down to two fuses left.
Process of elimination.

Or to save time if you don't have one a multi meter would be a good thing to buy now. With the ignition off pull the fuses one at a time and test at the panel to find the draw. Use a wedge or block to pin the drivers door switch so you don't get a false reading. Keep in mind the clock and radio do have a small draw at all times.

Might be time to disassemble the steering column to make sure the switch is fully disengaging. I never had mine apart so I don't know if they run a control rod to the switch below the column or if it is self contained at the switch.

Just got a call from the stealership. The verdict is in and it ain't good.

1. The Dummy Switch is contained within the ignition lock cylinder and cannot be replaced separately. Cost: $265

Additionally, my buddy (?), the service writer, had them go on...

2. New fuel pump is in order. Cost for stealership to install: $1022
3. The radiator has a few pinhole leaks. I can fix/replace this one.
4. Water pump is starting to weep.
5. Front brakes need replacement, including the rotors ($$$$$$)
6. Rear brakes aren't even making contact!
7. Leaking intake manifold. There's a product on the market that I'm tempted to try at the same time I replace the radiator.

Apparently, the previous owners were clueless as to vehicle maintenance, although they DID replace the steering components with Moog products (they left the paperwork in the owner's manual).

Arrrggggghhhhh! The repair job didn't solve the problem. There is STILL a short to ground somewhere that is causing the battery to discharge. If I press the dome light bypass switch, the dinging stops. I wonder if the headlight switch isn't bum.
