Speedometer pegged, odometer works???

Speedometer pegged, odometer works???

'96 Astro
Speedometer is fully wrap around pegged, but the odometer works. Any ideas?

Speed sensor. It's on the extension housing of the transmission.

Usually when the gauges start acting up, its a bad stepper motor that is bad. The original GM stepper motors are known to go bad. There is a newer improved version stepper motor.

On my full sized truck(K1500), I had to turn off the ignition while at speed once. This caused the needle to become stuck 'on the other side', to fix I had to get up to speed again and turn the ignition off and then on again. Not sure if that is your issue, but if the odometer is working properly then it can't be the sensor.
