Re: Looking for a new van.

Sorry to come so late, @timelessbeing , but any progress on the replacement-truck hunt? I recently acquired a 1997 GMC M11006 to replace a completely-worn-out Ford E-250 that's too big and heavy for my operating budget anyway, and I've no vehicle to spare. To my knowledge the first downsize commerc...

Re: WANTED: manual trans swap parts OR complete 4/5-speed va

The New Process Gear 4500 is a shoehorn at best. Mighty fat, as it's sized for full-sized trucks and vans. I'm also looking at a stickshift contingency for my 1997 M11006, and I've identified the TREMEC® TR-3160B as probably the best for the chassis; it's rated for 400 Nm (325 ft-lb) input torque, ...

Re: oil cooler manifold and line removal

 This Topic gave me an alternative approach! I'm already laying a contingency for Derale® 9000-Series engine oil, power-steering/Hydro-Boost, and transmission coolers for my 1997 M11006. Since I've all sort o' room betwichst the radiator and the fan, I could use dual D13614's, the transmissi...

Re: How to get rid of Dexcool (long)

 Good read here! My 1997 M11006 has a new Valucraft/Duralast main coolant pump (AutoZone, 1 yr, warranty) (the previous one, apparently a boneyard pull from a 2005 date, seized at 211,xxx miles), and I see SuperTech™ Universal Yellow (available at Wal-Mart, currently the price leader in univ...

Re: Radiator Fan Clutch choice

 Good choice there! I'm planning on going ACDelco® this spring for a fan reclutch -- I had to replace a seized water pump recently, but my stock fan clutch is good for now and the typically mild Central Valley (CA, USA) winter is none too demanding on cooling systems.

Re: Heavy duty radiator for '95+

](*,) Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm on this hunt. My 1997 M11006 came stock with a 1-row aluminum radiator with plastic tanks, and some aftermarket vendors have all-aluminum radiators with integrated heat exchangers for the engine oil (hot side) and transmission fluid (cold side). I don't wan...

Re: Embarking on an excellent journey with my SLX

O:) The SLX is the premium model with power everything. I'm in the process of making a work van out of an SLE originally configured for passengers; have some internal adjustments to make in the sliding sidegate (power door lock motor is mis-timed) and two external release handles to replace, but I c...

Re: Non-OEM Axle Swaps, Revisited

As far as I'm aware, the Express (except City Express) and Savana use the same centerline propshafts as all General Motors C/K/R/V pickups and chassis-cabs and G-series vans and chassis-cabs. General Motors had a bit of a shoehorning problem in the M-body that the powertrain offset to starboard solv...

Retrofitting trailer wiring on a 1997 Safari

For a 1997 GMC M11006, I've plans to fit a six-circuit isolator for the trailer wiring, so that any problems in the trailer not take out the van's lights in the process. I've ID'd all but two wires on the jack compartment stub harness (viz., 9 - 0.8 BR Tail Mrkr Lic; 18 - 1.0 YL, Left BT; 19 - 1.0 D...

Re: Non-OEM Axle Swaps, Revisited

 Thanks, @Herbie, for the scoutwork. For my 1997 SLE, I'm looking long-term at dropout-type full-floats with unequal-length shafts and tubes to match the stock powertrain offset to starboard. The 9" Currie, which introduced major improvements long after Ford Motor Company discontinued 9" pro...

Re: Astro V8 5 speed

 Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've info for @Logan on other candidate gears. Richmond Gear/Beloit once produced a ROD six-speed, which I reckon would have made the best installation, as all forks use a Long Machine & Tool external shifter; I'd have advised the 22:37 input/fifth gears, 41...

Re: composite headlight conversion 2005 safari

 Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've a related parts hunt. My 1997 Safari SLE shipped with the Guide/GM composite headlamps pre-installed (also true with the Astro LT and Safari SLT and SLX), but I need to drop the marker/park/directionals to where they are on all Astros (plus base Safaris...

Re: Fuel Pump - Fuel Sender Assembly - Replacement Procedure

I ran across a Japanese second source: We know about the AC-Delco MU1782 (GM P/N# 19180091; FRU# 19331282, 25178736), a design upgrade for my 1997 SLE. But apparently NIPPONDENSO wants in on the backport action, and their Fuel Pump and Sender Assembly SX2774 is advertised as having an improved pump...

Re: Converting 99 astro to 6 lugs...

Concerning the 6-on-5-1/2" spindles, would I have to backport the 2003-05 steering knuckles to my 1997 SLE to use them? Whereas my current set-up uses Passenger (viz., Caprice/Roadmaster) spindles, 2003-up saw C/K-1500 spindles forward. Of course, the larger lug pattern would better accommodate a f...

Re: How to wire up a NP 236 in place of a 136.

My approach would be more old-school. As part of an AWD-acquisition contingency, I's investigating what aftermarket hub locks, if any, were available for the S-10/Sonoma to cross-port to the Astro/Safari chassis. I'm also used to manual-shift transfer cases, both chain- (e.g. NP231) and gear-drive ...
